First Gold.

  1. Tipon outpointed Korean, took Gold too.
  2. Violito Payla defeated Somjit Jongjohor of Thailand.

Team Philippines finally got it’s first Gold in Doha Asian Games when Antonio “Gaga” Gabica defeated his compatriot Jeffrey “Bata” De Luna in an All-Filipino showdown in Men’s 9 Ball Singles Final.

Wow! After 11 days of drought, we have our first and only gold so far. Am I disappointed? Not really. You see, after dominating the SEA Games last year, our congress rewarded our athletes with a wonderful gift: a huge budget cut for year 2006! With that kind of treatment from the government, do you really expect that our athletes would win against the Olympic medallists of China, Japan, and Korea? Break please…

Despite all these, our contingent is giving it all to put us higher in the medal tally. Right now, our brightest hope for another gold is the boxer Joan Tipon who will face South Korea’s Han Soon Chul tomorrow in the Bantamweight Finals. Flyweight Violito Payla is also gunning for the gold. He is set to face the defending champion Somjit Jongjohor of Thailand in the Finals today.

Since boxing is my fave sport, I’ll set my pessimism aside . I believe that our boxers can do it. Try your best guys. Go for the Gold!

Boxing added two more golds. Im afarid its another bad stint for the country in the Asiad. Our only hope left is Lea Salonga lending her golden voice at the closing rites.
